Control Panels
- Console Construction
Photo
(1360x1020 - 190k)
Phil Sterett's done it again! This shot conclusively proves tons of stuff we
had previously worked out - the most major one is the angle of the very top
of the two front consoles which had been assumed due to reflections, but are
now shown in high relief. Good going Phil!
- From Keith Scaife / Phil
Sterett - an even clearer version of "the Ultimate
Interior Shot" only it's in B/W. Also on the "Equipment Locker"
page. (1424x1112

- Side Console Orientation
Retouched
(624x427 - 52k)
Raw (432x428 - 35k)
The plans show the side consoles as angling outward significantly, but this
analysis of CC's photo shows that the angle is nearly zero. Had I caught
this a long time ago, the plans would have been updated to reflect it.
- Recessed Center Console
Helmet
(2362x1046 - 395k) | Sans
Helmet (2326x1085 - 417k)
Stephen comes through again with these great shots showing, among other
details, the heretofore unnoticed depression between the horizontal console
and the central console. As can be seen in these shots, the two main
consoles meet up exactly with the central console, rather than being
recessed behind it. Very nice catch that explains a lot - especially why the
interior seemed a bit cramped in the model!
- "The Walker Photo"
Small (392x267 - 21k) |
Large (3173x2125 -
468k) | Enhanced
(1586x1062 - 469k)
Courtesy of Stephen Remato (Reservoir8C), this is a great shot
from the front of the Pod looking back. Shows the complete layout of the
panel sets. If you brighten up the larger image, you can see the equipment
locker on the starboard side.

- Ceiling Ring - Side View with Kubrick
Small (350x231 - 32k) | Medium
(700x462 - 83k) | Large (708x568

Nice side shots showing the ring around the top of the Pod interior. The
large scan extends further down.

More widely cropped version of the standard overhead shot.
This one almost lets us see what the deal with the protruding panel is.

- Waldo Controller
This is very difficult if not impossible to see in the DVD. Notice that it
is below the control panel. Page 102 of Bizony appears to show that there
are two of these controllers.
Also note that the side control panels are pie shaped (best way to explain
it, but you'll see in the photo) and that there are two distinct portions of
them. For more details see ...

This is where old-style VHS comes in REALLY handy. Notice how the control
panel and rear wall work together. Check out the A/C vent next to Dave's
head! Am I the only person who never noticed that before? The A/C vent is
probably the extension of the ceiling "wing" that can be
seen in ...

| Essential Kubrick (AKA
Reverse Shot)
The VHS version shows more detail (even though it's fuzzier). Here you can
see where the A/C vent comes down from the ceiling.
Does anyone know what's in the insets in the doorway? Dave does something in
one of them before he blows the hatch, but I can't see what.
The scan from "The Essential Kubrick" is sent to us courtesy of
Stephen Remato (Reservoir8C).
- Ceiling
Close up of scan from the b/w plates in the middle of the book. Shows the
layout of the controls better than the captures from the film. The color
shot from Essential Kubrick (above) makes this shot obsolete, but I'm
leaving it in the list.
Scanned from "The Making of Kubrick's 2001" by Jerome Agel.
- Rear Walls - New!

Enhanced view of the rear walls - confirming the angles shown
in the "Dave and Frank have a discussion" photo. Thanks to
Philster!
